BerkelBike Fitness

BerkelBike Fitness

The BerkelBike Fitness was developed for home use. Like the other BerkelBike models, it allows simultaneous training of both the arms and the legs.

The mechanism is designed so that the hand pedals and foot pedals are linked, allowing the legs to assist the arms or vice versa. It also enables the stronger side of the body to support the weaker side, for example in cases of hemiplegia.

The main difference compared to the Thera trainer is that this device has a built-in motor. This motor helps initiate the cycling movement and remains subtly active at a minimal level, ensuring continuous motion. The BerkelBike Fitness does not have a motor and must be started using arm (or leg) muscle power alone.

The BerkelBike Fitness and functional electrical stimulation

This exercise bike can be used in combination with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). If the bike is equipped with the FES system, even completely paralysed legs can be involved in the training. In this way, the BerkelBike Fitness offers a full-body workout, despite a severe condition such as a spinal cord injury.

There are eight different resistance levels, and you can view time, distance and calories burned on the integrated display. This is the most basic BerkelBike and the most affordable option for cycling with functional electrical stimulation.

Angelika Weber-Hamacher was a physiotherapist and has been diagnosed with MS since the age of 24. She keeps her body fit and in good condition by cycling on the BerkelBike Fitness, a stationary bike with combined arm and leg drive.

Using the BerkelBike Fitness is very easy. You simply need to place a sturdy chair or your own wheelchair in front of the device. Then place your feet on the pedals. You can secure them firmly with the adjustable straps and lower-leg fixation if necessary. Hold the hand grips and start your workout. The display will light up as soon as you move the hand grips or foot pedals.
